The Teaching Strategies of Writing English Movie Review Based on Process Approach——Take the Movie Review of Wolf Warrior IIas an example

Abstract
Based on the framework of Process Theory, This thesis studies the teachingstrategies ofwriting English movie review taking thewriting of themovie review of Wolf Warrior II as an example. The thesis points out thatthe appraisal part of the movie review should be paid close attention to. Besides, students should be reminded that don’t indulge in the details. And it is advisable that we should give comments both on the pros and cons of a movie.

I. TheProcess Approach to Writing
It is known that writers in real life don’t write in a simple linear progression, on the contrary, their minds are always generating ideas, changing words and transforming structures which make them go though some recurrent steps when they are creating a text. Though Hedge(1988), White &Arndt (1991) and Tribble (1996) present different frameworks of writing processes, there is a consensus on the three major stages for the teaching of this skill. I will particularly adopt Tribble’s terminology sine I consider it the clearest. He divides the process into Pre-writing, composing and drafting and revising and editing.
II.Writing English Movie Review Based on Process Approach
The main aim of a review is to provide information to potential readers, so the readers can decide whether to read it or not. The teaching proceduresare as follows: pre-writing, while-writing and post-writing.
While watching the movie, students are advised to take some notes and try to answer the following questions: What kind of movie it is? What happens in the story?Who are the main characters? What is the main theme of the movie? Is it well written? Would you recommend this movie? Besides, how to organize the notes, summarize the aspects of a movie review, write an outline, accumulate word bank, write movie review and rewrite it based on teaching assessment criteria.
III. The Teaching Case of English Movie Review Writing Based on Process Approach
1. Teaching Ideas
Learn to write English movie review taking the writing of the movie review of Wolf Warrior II as an example. The teaching procedures can be divided into the following stages: Pre-writing, composing and drafting and revising and editing.Pre-writing:watch the movie Wolf Warrior II,gather writing materials,write an outline. Learn some words and expressions to describe movie types, plot, comments and recommendation. While-writing: write the first draft. Post-writing:Use assessment criteria to polish the writing.
2. The Study of the Students
Through on semester’s study, students have accumulated around 2,000 words, know how to use basic sentence structures and some compound sentences properly in their writing. In addition, students have learned some writing skills during the writing practice.
3. Teaching Aims
Knowledge and Skills
(1).Students will learn some words and expressions related to a movie review
(2).Students will be able to write a movie review.
(3).Students will be able to develop writing ability by constructing framework and outline, learning from each other, peer-assessment etc.
Learning Strategies
(1). By learning from the example of the review of Wolf Warrior2, students can learn how to write a movie review.
(2). By peer-assessment, students can learn from each other and understand better the criteria of a good writing.
Feelings, Attitudes and Value
(1). Students will be able to improve their cooperative ability.
4. Teaching Important Points and Difficult Points
Teaching Important Points:
(1). To help students learn some words and expressions related to movie types, cast, plot, comments and recommendation.
(2). To help students learn how to write a movie review, such as how to organize it, the style, the tense etc.
Teaching Difficult Points:Get the students involved in giving comments on movies.
5. Teaching Procedure
Step I: Lead-in (3 minutes)
1) Greet the Ss and welcome the teachers.
2) Introduce the topic and the learning aims of the period
3) Enjoy a movie clip to warm up the class.
Step II: Pre-writing (12 minutes)
Task1: Learn some useful words and expressions related to movie types, cast, comments, plot, and recommendation by answering the questions about the movie Wolf Warrior 2.
(1). Instruct students to do blank-filling to get to know different types of movies and the cast of the movie.
(2). get a general idea of Wolf Warrior 2 by presenting pictures and questions.
(3). Organize students to work in groups to discuss the movie.
Step III : While-writing (15 minutes)
Task2: Write a movie review of Wolf Warrior
Step IV : Post-writing (5 minutes)
Present students’ movie reviews and make comments
Homework:analyze and perfect articles after commutative evaluation and correction.
IVThe Teaching Strategies of Writing English Movie Review Based on Process Approach
1. Teaching difficult points and important points should be paid close attention to. Among the following aspects:introduction、plot、characters、other information and comments and recommendation, the most changeling one is the comments。Teachers can provide several movie reviews and guide the students to analyze what aspects does the comment focus on: the cast,the acting,special effects, the sound effect,the story/plot,the directing,the view/the photography,the setting,the theme song. Gather some words and expressions needed to give comments,build word bank。
2. Students should be reminded that don’t indulge in the details. And it is advisable that we should give comments both on the pros and cons of a movie.
Conclusion
Process Approach believes that writing is a process of discovery, which focuses on development rather than on outcomes.By discussing ideas with students, letting them write, think and modify their texts and allowing them to share their compositions with classmates etc., teachers have a way of guiding learners to be critical and effective writers of their own work.
